Irregular verbs in the preterite have their own endings which most share, regardless of whether the verbs are -AR, -ER, or -IR. The easiest way to remember is that these verbs can be placed into one of three groups (I, U, and J). These verbs have irregular stems and then add the special irregular endings based on their group:
